The elite of beach handball will come together late this year on one of the world’s most famous coasts for the 2nd Beach Handball World Championship in Brazil. 12 women’s and men’s teams each will come to Rio de Janeiro, more precisely to Copacabana Beach, from 13 to 20 November to compete for the 2006 Beach Handball World Championship title. External conditions could hardly be any better: a finest sand beach of 4km in length and 100m in width, a stadium with a capacity of thousands of seats allowing a marvellous view over the Atlantic Ocean, only a stone’s throw away the player’s hotel and club districts.

If this place did not exist, these should be the standard to define and invent the paradise of beach handball. Not just by chance the natives affectionately call their Copacabana ‘Princesinha do Mar’ (‘little sea princess’). As was the case at the previous Beach Handball World Championship staged in 2004 in El Gouna, Egypt, 12 women’s and men’s teams each are being invited to the title contests. In the men’s category the African continent is allocated 2 places, Asia 2, Europe 4, Pan-America 1 and Oceania 1 aside from directly qualified teams of host Brazil and reigning World Champion Egypt. In the women’s tournament one African, two Asian, four European, two Pan-American and one team from Oceania will join reigning World Champion Russia and host Brazil to compete for the WC title.

Apart from the perfect conditions the host does have every chance of ‘playing the gallery’ in terms of sports too in front of a home crowd. In soaring to gold at the 2005 World Games Brazil’s women have proved they have to be counted among the world’s best in beach handball and are likely to take part in the medal ceremony.
